Call to Worship

Lord, we see your glory on the mountaintop,
We feel your presence in the desert places,
We discover your love through the journeys of our lives
and we come to worship you now.
Be with us, Lord of all power and might,
companion of our hearts, friend to those in need.
Be with us and grant us eyes to see, ears to hear and the will to be transformed.

Amen.

STF 83 Praise my Soul the King of Heaven

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to his feet thy tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
who like thee his praise should sing?
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise the everlasting King!

Praise him for his grace and favour
to his people in distress;
praise him, still the same for ever,
slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Praise him! Praise him!
Glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us;
well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes.
Praise him! Praise him!
Widely as his mercy flows.

Angels in the height, adore him;
ye behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him,
dwellers all in time and space.
Praise him! Praise him!
Praise with us the God of grace!

Henry Francis Lyte (1793–1847)

Bible Reading

Time to reflect:

I wonder if you’ve ever had something like a mountaintop experience.
There are times in our lives, aren’t there, when something happens that opens our eyes, dazzles us and gives us a sense of affirmation.  This can be in many different areas of our lives. For example, a mountaintop experience for a PE teacher might be seeing their student make it as a professional footballer.  For a climber it could be literally a mountaintop experience – making it to the summit of Mount Everest, and for an artist it might be selling their artwork to a renowned collector.

These moments, even those that are experienced by other people, make all our hard work worthwhile. It is these moments that help us to get through the everyday stresses of our lives. They spur us on and give us a renewed sense of purpose.

There may be moments in your life that you can look back on now and identify as a turning point. Perhaps there was a significant moment in your relationship when you knew that your partner was the person you wanted to spend your whole life with?

I encourage you to pause today, and reflect on those mountaintop experiences you’ve had in your life and how you were transformed by them.

As Christians, we may be able to identify a specific moment when we felt the love of God as a gift of grace to us personally. A moment when we accepted Christ as our saviour and perhaps, felt called to a particular path as a result of this.

These mountaintop experiences come out of nowhere and can stop us in our tracks.

In our reading today, Matthew says that Jesus was ‘transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white’. Those who have true mountaintop experiences are transformed in the process.

Once you’ve been to the mountaintop, you never see things in the same way again and it can be tempting to want to stay on that mountaintop – like Peter, in our reading, wanting to hold on to the moment,
saying to Jesus ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish,
I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah
’

But these moments aren’t meant to last forever. Inevitably, mountaintop experiences lead to the valley below.  If we look at what follows right after Jesus’ transfiguration, He, Peter, James and John come down from the mountaintop only to meet a man with a son who has epilepsy begging for Jesus to heal him.  So much for the ecstasy of the mountaintop, now there’s work to be done and not a moment to spare!

This is the message for us all. Consider the experiences of Peter, James and John, and that bright dazzling light on the mountaintop. Reflect on the mountaintop experiences in your life, and how they have transformed you but remember, that as Christians, we are called to be Christ’s light to the world. So don’t stay too long on the mountaintop, there is work to be done. Amen

Prayers of Intercession

Lord, we pray today moved by the power of the Spirit,
and inspired by the awesome light of Christ’s glory:

Lord, we are vessels of your love and light.
Give us the strength to make your ways known in our world.
Send your light into our hearts
and guide us to where we are needed.

Long ago you inspired Moses and Elijah.
be with those who lead people today;
give them the wisdom and insight to make the right judgements, courage to do justice
and determination to shine a light on all that is corrupt.
Send your awesome light into the hearts of those we think of now…

The disciples fell to the ground,
but Jesus touched them, saying,
‘Get up and do not be afraid.’
We pray today for all who are afraid,
Who suffer with sickness, hunger or despair
And for those who care for them
or who act on their behalf.
Send your healing
light into the hearts of those we think of now…
Loving Lord, hear our prayers.

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Please use the version that you prefer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
And deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
Now and for ever.

Amen.

STF 59 Lord the Light of your love is shining

Lord, the light of your love is shining,
In the midst of the darkness, shining:
Jesus, Light of the World shine upon us;
Set us free by the truth you now bring us –
Shine on me, Shine on me.

Shine, Jesus, shine,
Fill this land with the Father’s glory;
Blaze Spirit, blaze,
Set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow,
Flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth your word,
Lord, and let there be light!

Lord, I come to your awesome presence,
From the shadows into your radiance;
By your blood I may enter your brightness,
Search me, try me, consume all the darkness.
Shine on me. Shine on me.

As we gaze on your kingly brightness
So our faces display your likeness,
Ever changing from glory to glory,
Mirrored here may our lives tell your story.
Shine in me. Shine on me.

Graham Kendrick (b.1950)

Blessing

God of all creation,
dazzling with the light of your glory,
May we know now and forever,
That we bear your glorious light
And are marked with your call
To go into the world shining your love.
Lead us to places of encounter,
open our eyes to your glory,
and inspire us to tell others of your love.

Amen.
