Trusting God’s Direction in the New Season

As we begin a new year, it’s natural to feel a mixture of emotions: the excitement of a fresh start, the ache of a year passed, and perhaps a little apprehension for the unknown path ahead. We may think up resolutions—goals for health, relationships, and finance—but this transition is also an invitation to a deeper, more intentional reliance on our Father God, who directs our steps.

The psalmist reminds us, “You crown the year with Your bounty; Your paths drip with abundance” (Psalm 65:11, NIV). What a wonderful promise! It paints a picture not of our own striving, but of an Almighty God who precedes us, preparing the path and pouring out blessings along the way. This new year is not merely a blank page for our plans, but an opportunity to witness God’s faithful abundance unfold, even if it does in a way that we are not quite expecting!

It is easy to rush ahead into the new year making new plans. Though the turning of the year offers an opportunity for reflection. Taking time to honestly look back allows us to see God at work, even in the difficult moments.

Where did you see God’s faithfulness most clearly this past year? Was it in a moment of provision, a season of unexpected strength, or the comfort of a friend? Giving thanks acknowledges his sovereignty, that he is in control.

What was your deepest struggle, and what did it teach you about your dependence on God? Failure and weakness are not reasons for shame, but opportunities to experience Christ’s power that is always sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Where did you drift? Did your Holy Habits slip? Did worry or distraction pull you away from time with God and trusting in him? Confession, and being honest with God prepares our hearts for new growth.

This reflection is about recognizing the rhythm of God’s grace—a grace that has sustained us all through the last year.

We are called to be wise stewards of the time, talents, and energy God has given us. Setting goals is part of that stewardship, but as Christians, we must try to set them with God, not just for Him.

Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” This verse is a powerful antidote to New Year’s anxiety. We can plan with care, but we must try to hold those plans loosely, recognizing that God’s will is ultimately what will be fulfilled. God goes with us.

As an alternative to resolutions, why not consider setting a few faith-focused goals that invite God’s direction into your everyday life?

1.Aim to give meaningful time with Scripture. Whether it’s a chapter a day, a guided devotional, or practicing Lectio Divina, let His Word be “a lamp to your feet and a light to your path” (Psalm 119:105).

2.Cultivate a Heart of Service.  Ask God to show you one specific area where you can use your God-given gifts to serve others. This might be in your local church, your local community, or simply through intentionally encouraging of a family member. The love of God is perfected in love of a neighbour (Galatians 5:13).

3.Practice a prayer life that reflects dependence on God. Go beyond requests and commit to listening in prayer. You could record your prayers and, more importantly, the answers and promptings you receive. Be someone who pauses throughout the day to dependently call on His name (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

The Apostle Paul powerfully wrote, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14, NIV).

This new year calls us to the same action: Press On.

This means consciously choosing to leave the failures, regrets, and disappointments of the past year behind. It means resisting the temptation to coast in the comfort of success. It means fixing our gaze on the enduring, high call of our God and King

The new year is a precious gift. Let us step into it not with joyful, humble dependence. Trust in God, who has already crowned your coming year with His goodness.

What is the single, prayerful step you will take today to place your year under his direction?

Happy New Year and Every Blessing!
